T-shirt Dresses

These still need to be hemmed, but that won't change the look much.

This one is a little looser. There are a lot of puckers and bits of sewn zigzag threads around the edge of the shirt/skirt b/c I accidentally sewed some folds and undoing them made holes. However, they're not really obvious.

This one had some accidental folds, but I didn't have a lot of frog fabric left and so it's kind of pulled anyways, so it's not really noticeable.

Hard to see, but they are rows of ants with navy blue stripes at the sides. The pocket ended up on the left, but I did that on purpose b/c it's a two-colored pocket with navy at the back and the patterned fabric at the front.

Yes, the skirt is uneven, but I wasn't crazy about this combination anyways, especially the pocket ending up on the left (NOT on purpose).

This one is bunnies and came out very nicely, even if my thread isn't *quite* the right color.

T-shirt dress

I've made a whole bunch of these using old shirts, with more or less success, sometimes complete failures. I think I've finally got it. I'm using XL t-shirts from Kohls, either Croft & Barrow or Sonoma. The jersey fabric is about 20 inches long and works best if it's a little wider than the diameter of the shirt (this one was a little puckered because it was a bit shorter), about 46". I cut the slanted on the sides to get a little bit of swing and add in one pocket. They come out about knee-length.

Scarf-shirt dress

I used the instructions for making a shirt out of a scarf but didn't sew the side seams all the way down. I put in strips on the side to make it more swingy and then added a skirt all around. It won't take a really close look - for smooth seams on this knit fabric you need a serger - plus I don't have a really good space to lay everything out and get it even, but my standards are not exactly high, so I think it's good enough. I can see how I could add pockets, but I'm not feeling it right now so I won't bother.

Test shirt

From "Girl with a sewing machine" I'm not crazy about the fabric, but I'm just testing it. The idea is basically that you sew two scarves together. I hemmed them and the measurements, squares roughly 28x28" came out about right. I had to sew another inch or so at the collar.

I'd like to play with the collar line more and work on adding a skirt - I think if I put a triangle into the sides and then add the skirt it would work.

Sack Dress

First try at a dress. It was basically two pieces of knit fabric sewn together. The neckline only works if I'm not wearing a bra, so not ideal for work lol.

Purple tulip skirt and matching bag

I made this skirt out of remnants - I don't really remember what I originally got this fabric for, maybe I used it in a quilt - I matched it with purple Kona cotton and made a waistband out of salmon cotton broadcloth. I spent a lot of time fine-tuning the waistband and did a lot of basting and removing stitches afterwards. The even smaller remnants I used to make a little cross-body bag, since I didn't want to put a pocket in the skirt.

T-shirt dresses

I finished off a couple more knit skirts attached to t-shirts. This finishes this project and I'm going back to work on some quilts, while I think about trying some more ambitious clothing projects.

Reversible quilted skirt

I've had this fabric for... a long time. Since graduate school I think, so around 15 years and counting. I finally put it together. It doesn't have pockets, just loops for my keys (which is all I really use pockets for). I'm not sure if zigzag stitching the seams really worked, but it seems to be ok.

Shirt dress

Updated - didn't work at all, the cotton fabric was too tight. I cut it off and put a different skirt on it that really just lengthens the shirt into a tunic.

Not quite what I'd envisioned - maybe would have been better with a blue stripe? But it's got a pocket.

Shirt dress - Jersey frogs

This one came out more like I'd envisioned - I used a Jersey fabric, which matched the t-shirt I was sewing it to.

Remade shirt-dress

This was an experiment. I wanted to see if I could add a skirt to a shirt. It was tricky b/c corduroy is a bit tricky to sew on, so I might use more similar knit fabric next. This also doesn't have pockets, but it's just a sort of draft, trying it out, although it will be, I hope, wearable in a pinch.

Tiger Lily skirt

Second try on pockets - this one turned out well (yes, I only put one pocket in, that's all I need, to hold my keys). The fabric is by Heather Ross, Tiger Lily Mud, and I made a longer version of the skirt so I can wear it in storytime with less chance of the kids looking up it.

Bird skirt

The fabric was probably from Joann - brightly colored birds on a white background. I tested out adding an in-seam pocket, using a pattern from See Kate Sew. I figured out that I put the pocket too low and also that the pocket pattern is too shallow and wide an opening - I use it for my keys mostly - so I'm going to sew up an inch or two from the bottom and that will fix it.

Scarf

This was a (relatively) quick project. I bought a 1.5 yards of pure plush fleece and used about 3/4 of a yard to make a scarf for my mom. She said she didn't have a scarf long enough to go around her face, so it was too cold to go outside when the temperatures dropped below 30, so I have fixed that excuse. Heh. I zigzag stitched the edges with gold sulky thread.

Asian pattern skirt for Sara

I made this skirt for a friend - my mom did the basting and gathering of the tiers, b/c I don't like doing that part, but her arthritis makes it hard for her to do it, so she might not want to do it again. I did have the wrong measurements at first and had to take apart and add to the waistband and first tier.

Skirt with ruffle

I had partially made this one months ago and just finished it now.
